Siemens Solves Power over Ethernet Chanllenge for 802.11n Deployments
802.11n offers substantial benefits over previous wireless standards, with speeds up to five times faster than traditional WLANs, greater range and improved reliability to support high-performance mobile applications such as HD video, high-resolution imaging and voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN). However, with these benefits has come the considerable challenge of integrating the access points into an existing network, since additional power is required for dual-band 3×3 radios (those functioning in both the 2.4 and 5GHz bands) to work at optimum performance levels.
HiPath Wireless is the first solution to provide full dual-band 3×3 MIMO and 802.11n functionality that complies with the 802.3af Power-over Ethernet (PoE) standard, so enterprises can enjoy the highest performance without additional costs. Most enterprise WLANs rely on 802.3af switches, but the six radios used by 802.11n access points tend to draw more power than these switches can provide over a single connection. Some existing 802.11n solutions use a reduced number of radios or frequency bands, or force customers to simultaneously upgrade to higher-wattage, proprietary non-standard PoE switching infrastructure, resulting in significantly reduced performance and more complex and costly deployments.
“Enterprises are excited about 802.11n and the potential for new, high-performance wireless applications. But so far they have been hesitant to embrace the new technology out of concern that it will require significant changes to their existing network,” said Paul DeBeasi, senior analyst for Burton Group. “Siemens’ dual-band, 3×3 MIMO Access Points enable enterprises to deploy an 802.11n network using their existing 802.3af-compliant infrastructure.”
Siemens 802.11n solution enables enterprises to realize the full benefits of 802.11n, without costly upgrades to the backbone network and wireless controller infrastructure, thanks to its unique VNS (Virtual Network Services) architecture. The VNS architecture provides performance optimization for high-bandwidth applications by intelligently routing network traffic between the edge of the network and the core, depending on the application and available network capacities, to maximize the bandwidth that can be achieved on the network. This architecture was designed to achieve optimal high-bandwidth performance without requiring upgrades to the existing wired network controllers, making it easier and more cost-effective to deploy and integrate the solution across the enterprise. Competitive solutions that require all traffic to be forwarded to the central WLAN controller lead to the potential for significant bottlenecks due to the substantially higher bandwidth of 802.11n. Many vendors require costly upgrades to the wired backbone and new wireless controllers to fully implement 802.11n.
Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), one of the world’s leading convention, sports and entertainment venues, deployed the previous version of Siemens’ HiPath Wireless solution in December 2005 in response to increasing demand from venue users for wireless connectivity. With a campus that includes a 3.9 million square foot conference center, the Georgia Dome stadium and the 21-acre Centennial Olympic Park, GWCC enjoyed the flexibility and ease of use offered by the Siemens system. They are preparing to begin field trials of the new 802.11n HiPath Wireless solution in January 2008, to take advantage of the increased speed, range and reliability of 802.11n.
“We’ve been very pleased with the functionality and stability of our existing Siemens HiPath Wireless solution, and we’re excited about the potential that 802.11n offers for improved performance and range,” said Sam Brown, Director of IT Services for the center. “The fact that Siemens’ 802.11n portfolio does not require us to upgrade our switching infrastructure or our WLAN controllers ensures that we can seamlessly integrate 802.11n into our network with minimal cost and effort. Continuing to be a leader in technology in the convention industry is important to us. When we can increase speed, range and reliability of our wireless system, we know it’ll be great for our customers.”
Siemens’ 802.11n solution includes two new 802.11n HiPath Wireless Access Points, AP3610 (internal antenna) and AP3620 (external antenna), a new version of HiPath Wireless Convergence Software (V5 R1) that enables controllers to recognize and manage 802.11n access points, and a new version of HiPath Wireless Manager HiGuard that delivers advanced management and WIPS security for 802.11n-enabled networks, another key advancement from Siemens.
“In support of the mobile enterprise, Siemens now has a HiPath Wireless offering for new and existing customers looking to benefit from the considerable speed and reliability benefits provided by 802.11n technology,” said Luc Roy, vice president of Enterprise Mobility for Siemens. “The unique architecture and capabilities that we have designed into HiPath Wireless can give any enterprise the confidence that they can easily and cost-effectively deploy a high-performance wireless network, while taking care of ever increasing mobile business.”
Siemens’ HiPath Wireless solution will begin shipping in March 2008. The new HiPath Wireless Access Points will sell for $1,300/€960. Upgrades to the HiPath Wireless Convergence Software will start at $349/€280 and HiPath Wireless Manager HiGuard upgrades are available free of charge.

Through plug-and-play deployment, enterprises can forgo the costly building integrity analysis of network resources, or the cost/need to rewire a premise with expensive Cat5 or fiber cable.
- AlliedWare Plus, as part of the Allied Telesis Network Operating System (Network OS), provides a common interface across all platforms to minimize training costs associated with IP video network migrations and upgrades, enabling easier support processes.
“When building a solution to safeguard their people, organizations cannot take short-cuts or risks,” said Eric Floyd, senior vice president of partner development and alliances, Allied Telesis. “That’s why system integrators and enterprises turn to Allied Telesis to deliver high-quality, IP-based video security services over Ethernet networks. Our deep history and expertise in designing and implementing converged multi-play networks coupled with our advanced IP surveillance solutions enable a seamless migration from analog to digital video security systems, allowing enterprises to better protect their critical information and employee assets.”
Vertical Strengths
The Allied Telesis IP surveillance solution is ideal for specialized markets requiring maximum uptime and optimized performance to secure a physical location, information, and/or property. For example, Allied Telesis is working with international healthcare, education, government, service provider, and utility organizations to deploy its leading IP-based video security solutions around the world. Specifically, the Company leads in deploying these solutions to global healthcare facilities for use by emergency response and security teams to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety. Allied Telesis also recently announced its design and implementation of a real-time IP surveillance solution in the education market in the Hoxie, Arkansas, U.S. School District, in which the Company provides a single-view, remotely managed, port-based virtual local area network (VLAN) to ensure a more secure campus environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Global Partnerships
Securing a customer’s premise is a much greater challenge than a “one-size-fits-all” platform can provide. Allied Telesis strengthened its IP Surveillance solutions alliances within its overall Partner Program to include IBM and PSA Security Network®, the world’s largest electronic security buying cooperative, and to develop tailored IP security solutions addressing global enterprise surveillance challenges. IBM and PSA join a well-respected roster of Allied Telesis technology partners, including ADI, Anixter International Inc., Axis Communications, Bassler Electric, Dallmeier Electronic, DVTel Inc., Graybar, Ingram Micro, Intransa, I.T. in Motion, Milestone Systems, Pivot 3, Inc., and Synnex Corporation, as well as ADT Security Service and Red Hawk, UTC Fire & Security Company.
In addition, Allied Telesis has joined the Axis Communications Technology Partner Program aimed at companies delivering the infrastructure components required in an IP-Surveillance system. Allied Telesis and Axis will work together to identify and market values such as improved functionality and performance, sharing information, and education. The Technology Partner Program enables Axis and partners to offer complete solutions and have a comprehensive understanding of an IP Surveillance system’s components.

EB Complements its Tough VoIP Product Portfolio by Adding a New Accessory that Easily and Cost-Effectively Introduces Power over Ethernet Interfaces to Tactical Military Environments
OULU, Finland, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ — EB, Elektrobit Corporation (OMX: EBC1V), a developer of cutting-edge embedded technology solutions for automotive and wireless industries, today introduced the EB Tough VoIP Power over Ethernet (PoE) Injector™ — a complementary accessory to its Tough VoIP product portfolio. The new Tough VoIP PoE Injector is a network-agnostic solution that provides PoE-supported data interfaces to tactical military communications equipment.
A relatively new approach to powering communications equipment for military use, PoE is a flexible option for providing both secure data connections and the required power supply needed to perform tactical military communication. EB’s compact Tough VoIP PoE Injector is a unique solution for the military environment that can easily make communications equipment PoE-ready. By deploying the Tough VoIP PoE Injector, military personnel gain the flexibility to combine data and power supply over a single Ethernet cable — all without the costly need to rip-and-replace their current communications infrastructure.
“We’ve seen similar Power over Ethernet accessories used in traditional commercial markets, yet recognized the need to bring this type of solution to the niche military communications space,” said Mikko Viitaniemi, senior manager, Defense Products, EB Wireless Solutions. “Our goal was to improve the interoperability of different equipment and platforms in tactical communications environments by developing and extending the Tough VoIP product portfolio. We believe today’s introduction of the rugged and durable Tough VoIP PoE Injector meets this objective.”
The EB Tough VoIP PoE Injector is useful in the military field environment, as it has the capability to utilize vehicular power supplies that are available. The device can combine vehicular power supplies in the voltage range of 10-30V DC with regular Ethernet data, while providing a PoE-supported Ethernet connection for user devices — whether they are EB Tough VoIP products or third party equipment.
Mikko Viitaniemi, continued, “As military applications and communications equipment rely more heavily on robust, power-intensive devices, the Tough VoIP PoE Injector becomes more critical in tactical use. By deploying the Tough VoIP PoE Injector, military operations gain enhanced communications as greater broadband data connectivity can be delivered to the field, vehicles, and on-the-ground command posts.”
The EB Tough VoIP solution is a robust, highly-reliable, ruggedized IP-based communications system. The complete EB Tough VoIP product portfolio will be showcased at MILCOM 2010, in San Jose, California, USA – booth #1736.
